Associate Professor Tian He Wins Advanced Individual Award of Global Confucius Institute

        On December 10, the 11th Global Confucius Institute Conference was held in Kunming, Yunnan Province. Liu Yandong, Vice-Premier of the State Council and Chairman of the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), attended the conference, delivered speeches and presented awards to advanced individuals and units of the Confucius Institutes. Over 2400 reprsentatives attended the meeting, including university presidents and representatives of the Confucius Institutes of 140 countries, diplomatic envoys to China and representatives of language and culture promotion institutes of other countries, as well as representatives from national ministries, local education authorities and Chinese universities. Chen Baosheng, Minister of Education and Vice Chairman of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, presided over the opening ceremony.

           At the Conference, Tian He, associate professor of the College of History and Culture of NWNU and Chinese director of the Confucius Institute at Khartoum University in Sudan, was awarded the "Advanced Individual of the Global Confucius Institutes".

          At the conference, 25 advanced Confucius Institutes, 5 advanced Confucius Classrooms and 30 advanced individuals were awarded, among whom 8 were Chinese directors of the Confucius Institute. Thanks to the joint efforts of both China and overseas partners and all circles of the society, Confucius Institutes have developed steadily over the past 12 years. The quality of education has been improved continuously, the service capacity has been expanded and the operational mechanism has been perfected, thus new vitality was injected to their sustainable development. Currently, 511 Confucius Institutes and 1073 Confucius Classrooms have been established in 140 countries, with an enrollment of 2.1 million students. The Confucius Institute has become a "bridge builder" for cultural exchanges and mutual learning between the East and the West, an important channel for the world to understand China, and a good platform for China to deepen friendship and cooperation with other countries.

          In August 2012, Tian He was appointed by Hanban as the Chinese director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Khartoum in Sudan, which was co-established with NWNU. Since then, he has made positive contributions in fields such as Chinese teaching, cultural communication, daily management, site construction and cooperation with Chinese enterprises at the Confucius Institute of Khartoum University. Over the past five years, the Confucius Institute at Khartoum University has gained rapid development. The number of students has increased from 500 in 2012 to 5,770 in 2016 while the number of classes has added from 22 to 200, over 20,000 Chinese language learners have been trained here. The teaching and office space has been expanded from less than 400 square meters to1440 square meters. Teaching and office facilities such as computer, air conditioner and multimedia classroom have been equipped, and the teaching, working and living conditions have been enhanced considerably.

         In 2013, the President of the University of Khartoum in Sudan was awarded the honorary title of "Advanced Individual of Confucius Institute ". In 2015, the Confucius Institute at Khartoum University won the honorary title of "Excellent Confucius Institute". In 2016, Tian He, Chinese director of the Confucius Institute won the prize of "The Sino-Sudan Friendship Outstanding Contribution Award" issued by Sudan government.
